When You Can’t Feel His Presence: Finding God in the Room

Last week, a client sat across from me, tears streaming down her face. “I know God is supposed to be with me,” she whispered, “but I feel so alone in this depression. Where is He?”

This is where Maverick City’s “In the Room” speaks such profound truth into our darkest moments. The song reminds us of a beautiful reality: God’s presence isn’t dependent on our ability to sense it.

When anxiety floods your mind at 3 AM, He’s in the room. When grief feels suffocating and prayer feels impossible, He’s in the room. When you’re sitting in a therapist’s office wondering if healing will ever come, He’s in the room.

The song beautifully captures how Jesus shows up in our mess—not waiting for us to clean ourselves up first, but meeting us exactly where we are. This isn’t just theological theory; it’s the foundation of genuine healing.

I’ve witnessed this truth countless times in my practice. The single mom overwhelmed by trauma discovers strength she didn’t know she had. The teenager battling suicidal thoughts finds a reason to keep going. The couple on the brink of divorce experiences breakthrough. In each case, healing happens not because they suddenly felt God’s presence, but because they learned to trust He was working even when they couldn’t see it.

Faith isn’t about constant emotional highs or perfect circumstances. It’s about anchoring ourselves to the truth that Emmanuel—God with us—means exactly that. WITH us. In the therapy room, the hospital room, the break room where you’re crying over your marriage, the living room where you’re disciplining difficult children.

The next time you feel abandoned in your struggle, remember: your feelings are valid, but they’re not the final authority on spiritual reality. He sees you. He’s with you. He’s working, even in ways you can’t yet understand.

You’re not walking through this alone.

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28:20
