The Sacred Practice of Writing

After nearly twenty years of walking alongside clients in their healing journeys, I’ve witnessed the profound power of putting pen to paper. The same transformative practice that helps process trauma, anxiety, and depression in my therapy office becomes even more powerful when applied to our spiritual lives.

When we journal while reading Scripture, we’re not just passively consuming God’s word—we’re actively engaging with it. Writing slows us down, forcing us to truly absorb what we’re reading rather than rushing through verses. It creates space for the Holy Spirit to speak into our hearts and minds.

I encourage my clients to write without editing themselves, letting thoughts flow freely onto the page. The same applies to Bible journaling. Don’t worry about perfect theology or eloquent prayers. Simply capture what strikes you: a verse that brings comfort, a question that challenges you, or a prayer that bubbles up from your heart.

Your notes become a sacred record of your spiritual journey. Years later, you’ll flip back through pages and see how God was working in your life, often in ways you couldn’t recognize at the time. These written conversations with Scripture become testimonies of His faithfulness.

Whether you use wide margins in your Bible, a separate journal, or even your phone’s notes app, what matters is that you’re creating dialogue with God’s word. In a world that never stops talking, journaling helps us learn to listen—to Scripture, to our hearts, and to the still, small voice of our Savior.

Your healing journey and your faith journey both flourish when you give them voice through writing!

Here’s an example of a great journal to use to begin your writing journey!
