The Golden Spice: A Therapist’s Take on Turmeric for Your Canine Companion

In my therapy practice, I often discuss the mind-body connection with clients—how physical wellness directly impacts mental health. This same principle applies to our four-legged family members, which is why I’ve become passionate about incorporating turmeric into my dog’s daily routine.

As someone who witnesses daily how inflammation affects human mood and cognitive function, I was intrigued to learn that turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, offers similar anti-inflammatory benefits for dogs. Just as chronic inflammation can contribute to depression and anxiety in humans, it can affect our pets’ comfort and behavior too.

My black lab struggled with joint stiffness as he aged. After consulting with our veterinarian and adding a pinch of turmeric (mixed with a bit of coconut oil for better absorption) to his meals, I noticed improved mobility and what seemed like better overall mood. He became more playful and engaged—much like clients who experience relief when we address underlying physical discomfort.

The parallel struck me: just as I encourage clients to consider holistic approaches to wellness, our dogs deserve the same comprehensive care. Turmeric supports not just joint health, but potentially immune function and digestive wellness too.

Always consult your veterinarian before adding supplements, especially if your dog takes medications. But for many dogs, this simple golden addition to their bowl might offer the same anti-inflammatory benefits that have made turmeric a staple in human wellness circles.

Our pets give us unconditional love—shouldn’t we give them every opportunity to feel their best?

Here’s a link to the turmeric supplement I use with my boys! Just a couple added to their dinner does wonders!
